I love when I find a new product or service that can make life easier. Especially when it comes to automating tasks that I do regularly either for clients or myself. It always amazes me how much time you can save, just from putting a few little tasks on autopilot.

Enter If This Then That (IFTTT for the initiated.) I have run across this site before, but it was a while ago when they were just getting started. IFTTT is a service that lets you create powerful connections with one simple statement:

Some of the things you can automate are:

  • Thank someone for following you on Twitter.
  • Schedule a tweet for once a day.
  • If you are Tagged on Facebook, send that photo to your email inbox.
  • Back up all of your Instagram photos.
  • Sync your Dropbox and Google Drive files.
  • Get an early bird gym wake-up call.
  • Back up your contacts to a Google spreadsheet.
  • Post your Facebook page status updates directly to Twitter.
  • Make a “rescue call” to your cell phone to get out of a bad date or conversation.

There are thousands of ways that IFTTT can be used to help you save time or make every day tasks more manageable.

The easiest way to get started is to sign up on the site, then see what “recipes” other users have already created that you can use. That way you can get an idea of the types of things IF This… can do for you. Once you have the hang of it, you can start creating your own recipes and sharing them with the rest of the world.

Just remember to use automation wisely. Sometimes grabbing photos of yourself from a friend’s Facebook page and automatically posting them to your timeline without reviewing them first is not a good idea. Also, don’t let automation take the place of personal interactions with your contacts, or fans on your social media channels. They are friends or followers because they want to interact with you, the person, not some robot in the cloud.
