Ever want to take credit card payments from your clients? If so, take a look at the Square. (https://squareup.com/)

Taken straight from the Square site: “Square is a revolutionary service that enables anyone to accept credit cards anywhere. Square offers an easy to use, free credit card reader that plugs into a phone or iPad. It’s simple to sign up. There is no extra equipment, complicated contracts, monthly fees or merchant account required.”

So what devices can you use Square on?
Plenty. You can find the Square app on the iTunes App Store or Android Market on the following devices:
Apple iOS

* iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4
* iPod touch (2nd generation or later)
* iPad

Google Android

* Motorola Droid, Droid X
* HTC Nexus One, Droid Incredible, Evo, Desire, Hero (With Android 2.X)
* Samsung Galaxy S series (including the Captivate, Vibrant, Epic 4G and the Fascinate), Intercept
* LG Ally
* Dell Streak

How about processing fees?

Square’s card processing fees are simply:

2.75% + 15¢ for swiped transactions

3.5% + 15¢ for keyed-in transactions

That’s it! There are no activation, gateway, monthly, early termination, hidden fees or any additional costs to use Square. Every credit or debit card Square accepts (Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover) have the same flat rate. These fees are static and do not change depending on how much the transaction was for. Since fees are taken out of each transaction as they occur, there is no fee schedule. Square also does not require a contract upon signup and since they only charge per transaction, it doesn’t cost you anything if you don’t use it!

So how do you sign up?

Signing up for Square and receiving your free card reader is easy!

* First, make sure that you meet all their requirements.
* You can sign up on their website or…
* …by downloading the app from either the iOS App Store or the Android Market. Visiting squareup.com/app on your device will take you straight to the relevant download page.

Once you’ve input all of your account information and are activated, your card reader will be shipped to the address you signed up with within 1-2 weeks. You’ll automatically receive an email from them as soon as your reader is traveling to it’s brand new home.

One word of warning on payouts. (From the Square site.)

“Instead of having limits on how much you can accept with Square, we implemented a system that keeps a regular balance in your Square account in case a chargeback or a refund were to occur. Basically it works like this:

Our system will calculate whether you accepted more or less than $1,000 from 7 days prior to every transaction. If you accept over $1,000 in that timeframe, anything above that will remain in your Square account for 30 days and anything under, the payout will be initiated within 24-36 hours. As most chargebacks and refunds occur within 30 days, your Square balance helps to mitigate this.

This amount certainly isn’t permanent and we are more than willing to work with you to increase it. If you find that your funds are being held on a regular basis or you have just signed up and anticipate transacting more than this amount, write us via the email link below and we’ll ask you a few questions about your business to help us personalize your Square account.

For more information on how often you get your money, see our article on bank deposits.”

So, if you are looking for a simple and affordable way to take payments from your clients, I think it is worth your time to check out the Square. I am sure there are other products out there, and many more on the way. But Square has started a trend that I love to see. Helping businesses do business from anywhere, at any time, for less money. Go Square!
